Since starting his first company with six friends in 1990, and selling it to Microsoft in 1995, Karl has built and sold five companies, the most recent in 2009 to global logistics company Deutsche Post DHL, and led two companies to their Initial Public Offering. He has encountered and overcome “Founder’s Syndrome” both in his own companies and in those companies he has mentored, and he has had the rare experience of growing his own company from a two person start-up to a international business encompassing 15 subsidiaries and an IPO on the stock exchange.

As Chairman of The Neutral Group CC, Karl is currently preparing Neutral Fuels LLC for an IPO on the London AIM stock market in 2023, building Neutral Assets LLC into an “Internet of Things” asset management company, and has recently partnered with the government of Ras Al Khaimah to create and implement a highly innovative waste management strategy.

Since 2006, Karl has dedicated his time to making a global difference in the battle to mitigate climate change. His direct actions have changed the path of such global corporates as DHL, Del Monte, Anglo American, and McDonald’s resulting in over 10 million tonnes of CO2e savings.

A British national who moved with his family to Dubai in 2009, Karl has experience conducting business in 46 countries, and has established subsidiaries in over 20. Karl now describes Dubai as his home, with his active business interests spanning South Africa, the UK, New Zealand, and the GCC.

Karl’s first degree is in Industrial Engineering, and although he worked as a C and C++ software programmer on the early stages of the creation of the Internet, he prefers business, graduating from Henley Management College with an executive MBA in 2006 writing his thesis on “Psychological profiling of start-up teams”.

In 2010 he became the first Adjunct Lecturer at the prestigious Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi, with a special interest in sustainable business strategies.

In 2017 he was selected as a Judge for the prestigious Hult Prize, which led to a guest role as Catalyst for the Hult International Business School which is a private global business school with campus locations in San Francisco, London, New York City, Dubai, Boston, and Shanghai.

In 2018 Karl was appointed Senior Lecturer, Department of Public Governance And Sustainable Development, and to the faculty at Modul University in Dubai. He is concurrently completing his PhD entitled “Can psychometric profiling improve the success of innovative management teams in the United Arab Emirates ?”
