Public Speaking 101: Here’s How To Hold The Attention Of A Live Audience
The rise of social media has seemingly eliminated the fear of being self-conscious for many people. The days of only the theatrical students confidently speaking in front of a camera are gone. Even the quietest person in class can now run a popular Instagram blog featuring stunning photos and videos of themselves.
The rise of social media has seemingly eliminated the fear of being self-conscious for many people. The days of only the theatrical students confidently speaking in front of a camera are gone. Even the quietest person in class can now run a popular Instagram blog featuring stunning photos and videos of themselves.
However, presenting in front of a live audience is an entirely different ball game. When you stand before a room full of people waiting to hear you speak, you understand the meaning of "stage fright." We've all experienced it. Recording content with your phone on a tripod and editing it is simple compared to delivering a speech to a live audience.
To help make your life easier when giving a TedTalk or similar presentation, here are some useful tips for becoming a successful public speaker:
1. Speak slowly
When addressing an unfamiliar audience, speak slower than you usually would. In everyday life, you converse with people who are familiar with your speaking style and accent, but new listeners may struggle to keep up. Give them time to follow your every word by speaking at a slower pace. This will have a significant impact on keeping their attention. Galloping through your speech may cause many to lose interest, so take your time to ensure they can keep up.
2. Make eye contact with audience members
You don't need to make eye contact with every member of the audience, just a few will suffice. Rather than sweeping your eyes across the entire room, engage specific people with direct questions and statements. This will capture their attention and keep them engaged.
3. Be authentic
As social creatures, we can sense when someone is not genuinely convinced of what they are saying. This is why most people reject salespeople. They can tell that the salesperson has been paid to promote a product and lacks conviction.
