Dr. Hakan Gürsu: Design Expert
Dr. Hakan Gürsu is an award-winning industrial designer who has been honored by world’s prestigious design organizations. The design and innovation firm he founded was selected among Turkey’s Top 40 Entrepreneur Companies. He’s been honored in world prestigious design competitions by receiving more than 150 design awards within 9 years and made Turkey rank second in World Design Rankings held in Europe. Dr. Gürsu contributed to several national and international conferences as a lecturer on innovation, creativity and design. His book “Innovation” that reflects upon his experience on the area was published in 2014. Consecutively, he was honored as the “Designer of the Year” in 2014 by International Association of Designers.
Industrial Designer Dr. Hakan Gürsu graduated from Middle East Technical University Industrial Design Department in 1984 in first rank and completed his master degree in Architecture and PhD in City Regional Planning. He continued his profession in various projects in product design, interior, architecture and city planning and in diverse centers including Russia and Japan. In 1991, Japanese Industrial Design Association deemed him worthy of the ‘Pioneer of Design’ award. Through his academic career, he worked as a professor at METU, is the head of Automotive Design Department and member of Brand-C Corporate Identity Unit. Also working close with the industry, he contributed the development of several industrial products and technologies and has several patented designs and IPs developed in various projects for companies and business partners.
In 2006, he founded the design consultancy firm Designnobis, which became a sustainable innovation center. Creating solutions to world’s contemporary problems about water, energy, food, space and waste with his visionary projects, Dr. Gürsu has been honored with several prestigious awards and accolades including International Design Awards, Green Dot Awards and A’ Design Award. His work has been featured worldwide through press and media, including BusinessWeek, Popular Science, Wired, Fast Company, etc. Among his creations are Volitan, a “sailboat” powered by solar and wind energy, and Fire Knight vehicle, which sprays soil instead of water to extinguish forest fires. Ranging from boats, toys and furniture to electrical devices, his environmentally friendly and visionary projects are introducing unusual solutions to common problems.
Dr. Gürsu continues his professional career as a designer that contributes to sustainable development and as an educator that trains future design minds. Through the company Designnobis, he serves as a consultant for nurturing innovation culture and creativity in corporations and foundations.
