Biography
Aparna Shewakramani is a former attorney turned bestselling author, TV personality, and speaker who rose to prominence as the breakout star of Netflix’s Emmy-nominated Indian Matchmaking. Her unapologetic approach to life and strong-willed personality made her an overnight ambassador for women advocating for their voices to be heard—not just in their personal relationships but also in their workplaces and communities.
Following the global success of Indian Matchmaking, Aparna fearlessly addressed the intense public scrutiny she faced, from cyberbullying to death threats, sharing her story across over 200 media outlets, including The New York Times, Washington Post, O Magazine, Time, Refinery29, PopSugar, Grazia, Vogue, and The Guardian. She has been a featured guest on The Tamron Hall Show, Late Night with Lilly Singh, and Kal Penn Approves This Message, as well as on 75+ podcasts.
In 2022, Aparna channeled her experiences into her bestselling memoir, She’s Unlikeable: And Other Lies That Bring Women Down, published by Chicago Review Press and HarperCollins India. The book provides an unfiltered behind-the-scenes look at her reality TV journey while offering practical life lessons on authenticity and self-empowerment. The memoir became a bestseller in India and gained widespread recognition in the US and Canada, resonating with women determined to reclaim their own narratives.
Before stepping into the public eye, Aparna practiced law for a decade, holding a JD from Vanderbilt University Law School and a BA from Rice University. Now, as a “recovering attorney,” she has pivoted her career towards writing, digital storytelling, and brand consulting. She is actively developing new creative projects, including feature screenplays and a docu-feature, further cementing her role as a dynamic storyteller.
A sought-after speaker, Aparna delivers keynotes and fireside chats on topics such as leadership, empowerment, authenticity in the workplace, overcoming cultural biases, digital storytelling, and self-advocacy. She has spoken at corporate DEI events, university conferences, nonprofit fundraisers, and major industry summits, including SXSW and Harvard Business School’s Media Conference.
Born in London and raised in Dubai and Houston, Aparna now embraces a nomadic lifestyle, splitting her time between Texas and NYC. She remains an advocate for boldness, individuality, and the power of storytelling, ensuring that every stage she steps on becomes a platform for meaningful conversations.
