Biography

Dr. Shurooq Amin is a multidisciplinary, award-winning artist and curator with a PhD in Ekphrasis. With over 30 years of experience in the art world, she is a pioneer of socio-political "artivism" in the Middle East. Amin was the first Kuwaiti female artist to exhibit at the Venice Biennale, the first to be auctioned at Christie's, and the first to be interviewed by BBC’s political program, Hard Talk. Additionally, she was the first Kuwaiti artist to mint her work as NFTs and to break the stereotypes of what it means to be an Arab female artist in her country. Furthermore, she is one of the first Arab women to enter Web3 and bridge the gap between art and technology.

Amin's work pushes socio-political boundaries and explores inherent cultural dialogues to instigate positive change in society. Since her foray into NFTs in early 2021, she has been supporting other women in finding their voices in Web3 and gaining autonomy as creators. In 2022, Amin founded and curated Kuwait’s first IRL NFT exhibition entitled "WAGMI." She also curated "From Strike to Stroke," Ithra Museum’s first NFT collection for the World Cup Qatar 2022. Additionally, she became one of the first Arab women to exhibit at NFT Paris, NFT London, NFT NYC, and Beijing. She was also a speaker at the Women on the Front Lines conference in Jordan in May 2023, among other international conferences and universities.

She presents in both Arabic and English.
